Apostate Festivities like Diwali & their Issues!

Deut 4 (Old Testament)
19 “And beware not to lift up your eyes to heaven and see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, and be drawn away and worship them and serve them, those which the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven.
20 “But the LORD has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, from Egypt, to be a people for His own possession, as today.

Rom 1 (New Testament)
20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22 Professing to be wise, they became fools,
23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.
24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.
25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

The above scripture speaks of God’s sovereignty in reprobation and man’s wilful rebellion against God unto eternal damnation. We ought to understand that though all things are reconciled in Christ (Col 1:16-20), none can come to Jesus unless the father first draws them (Jn 6:44). In this reconciliation, Jesus makes peace by the power of His blood between God and the elect and thus the elect who are called out from this world as peacemakers and sons (Mat 5:9), these rightfully oppose the world, who from their appetite for anarchy are given to abuse their stewardship over the earth by using everything to serve nothing more than themselves.

Yesterday I was unfortunate enough to pull my beloved building dog Hoppit out of the gutter. The reason he jumped in was because he wanted to escape the firecrackers of Diwali. I have heard many Hindus contemplating on the kind of nuisance their festivals are and I do agree with them fully because their festivals showcase a very poor stewardship over the environment. Besides every attempt made to keep Diwali safe, Holi safe, Dahi Handi safe and Ganesh Chaturithy safe has failed badly. I think the main issue with these festivals is the idolatry because these people have exchanged the worship of the living God Almighty with the lies they themselves have fabricated to deceive their own souls into eternal damnation. As an Indian, I believe in talking about all the issue that affect this country and I couldn’t care less about people who are scared about raising important issues out of fear of displeasing the masses. If we want a clean India, we need to deal with all the major factors that are affecting this country and not just the ones which people are OK to talk about.

Those who live in Mumbai will know that at high noon, it is hard to even get a straight 300 meters of visibility, thanks to the smog which is worsening day by day. There was a time you could see the Gateway of India even when you were far-off by ferry but that doesn’t happen today. It said, since 2010, the average Diwali pollution levels have shown very rapid build-up at least seven to eight times, while peak levels have hit ten times the standard. As per a study done by Chest Research Foundation (CRF), Pune, fire-crackers increased the level of sulphur dioxide 200-fold above the safety limits prescribed by World Health Organisation (WHO). This doesn’t only affect us but has a profound impact on birds and animals as well in the area. Such pollution levels happen to trigger asthma attacks in people and cause new cases of asthma with pollutants linked to firecrackers such as:
Sulphur dioxide: Causes wheezing and shortness of breath
Cadium: Can cause anaemia, damage kidneys and can also affect the nervous system
Copper: Irritates the respiratory tract
Lead: Affects the nervous system
Magnesium: Can cause metal fume fever
Nitrate: Can cause mental impairment
Nitrite: Can cause skin problems, eye irritation, and respiratory problems in children

Gen 1 (About our God given stewardship)
28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

John 3 (How salvation is holistically dependent on Christ)
18 “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Rom 5 (How we are restored in Christ from fallen Adam)
17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

If we were to look at Gen 1:28 & Rom 5:17 in the light of Jn 3:18, we understand that the poor failed stewardship of Adam is restored only in Christ, and it is for this reason that nations which were shaped by the Gospel happen to do more for the environment than any other because if truth be told, if you are living for nothing more than yourself then you happen to be robbing yourself of all the hope, life has to offer you in God.

John 12
24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.
25 “He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal.
26 “If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honour him.

Someday we shall understand that the origin of government is not the people but God and that exactly is the issue we have with democracy because though we have laws in place like the ‘Right to Sleep’… a fundamental right, which moved the Government of India to ban firecrackers between 10 pm and 6 am during Diwali, while also having The Central Pollution Board of India ban firecrackers with a decibel level greater than 125 at a distance of 4 meters from the bursting point; though we have such laws in place, nobody follows them because the government in its attempt to appease the masses denies the individual his/her rights and so demonized democracy exercises anarchy and functions as an ochlocracy (mob rule) in infringing upon the rights of the individual.

Mat 22
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”
37 And He said to him, ” ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
38 “This is the great and foremost commandment.
39 “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
40 “On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”

To conclude, the issue with Diwali as it is with many other festivals, which so often infringes upon the law, is that the people do not have God first in their lives and so long as God is not first in their lives, everything they have been given stewardship over, they will use to sinfully satisfy their own appetite. It is no wonder that the Bible teaches in Rom 8:19 that the earth anxiously awaits the revealing of the children of God (Jn1:12-13), who will ascertain their rightful stewardship over the earth in living for God’s glory.

The Godly Decorum of the State

Acts 4
18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! 20 As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened. 22 For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.

Roman 13
13 Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. 2 So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished. 3 For the authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right, but in those who are doing wrong. Would you like to live without fear of the authorities? Do what is right, and they will honour you.

The above verses helps us understand the role of government and in what manner we are accountable to them and in what manner we are not. As you read further on, you will see that what we owe the government is obedience to the Moral Law of God (Mat22:36-40), where God is first and concern for neighbour is at par with self. A Godly decorum for government may seem appalling for many but that is because we are so used to a system of government that runs almost every aspect of our lives that we have grown used to our chains. We live in a society where it is taboo for one to criticise the government while the people’s indifference towards God is an atmosphere we are all very familiar with. In a true Biblical Theocracy however, it is God who is above criticism, not the government. In a Democracy, the state is accountable to the people and so if the people are a licentious lot then the state sets Laws to appease the people’s immoral appetite, which in God’s time incurs God’s deserving justice. To site a few examples, the legal age for sexual consent in Nigeria is 11, while it is 12 in the Philippines and Angola, and 13 in Burkina Faso, Comoros, Niger and Japan. The cost of licensing such immorality then amounts to licensing murder through abortion. WHO estimates that 125,000 unborn babies are aborted everyday across the world! Can you imagine, how such a genocide would reflect in the newspapers daily, if society only accepted: unborn babies are human beings? As much as a baby can kick in the mother’s womb, it can also experience pain but the only reason we look the other way concerning abortion is because, in a democracy the individual is sovereign, being a law to himself/herself and so he/she does as he/she pleases. The media too goes on, as though covering wickedness is a priority over covering righteousness in society. Take for instance the #lgbt population in the USA, which is about 3.8%, yet these wicked lot get about 70% of media coverage over everything and everybody else. In India, the LGBT is about 2.5 million in a population of 1.25 billion and the media here too uses celebrities to condone the destructive and sick LGBT ideology in society.

Isaiah 9:6 (A prophesy concerning Jesus)
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

In a theocracy, the State is accountable to Christ and we understand that the Bible serves as a framework for civil law from the appointment of Judges by Moses to settle civil disputes in Exo18:13:27 but ever so often, the Sacred Cow for many professing Christian happens to be Religious Neutrality, which is far from the truth in any culture because though society may claim such a thing as religious plurality, it is alway one religion that remains dominant over the rest. It is as Jesus says in Mat 12:30, if you are not gathering, you are scattering, if you are not with Him, you are against Him because if God is not first in your life, anything else that rivals God’s right over your heart is idolatry. The State is purposed to serve one duty only and that is to punish lawlessness and protect the lawful but this is not true of the modern state which purposes to terrorise good people. Take Sweden for example, a country of 9.8 million people, their government in claiming to be a Humanitarian Superpower plans to spend about 3 billion Swedish crowns of tax payers money in 2016 to house refuges in the country, while about 34000 still remain homeless in Sweden. We therefore see that it is essential for the State to stick to what is right and wrong as defined in the Bible (Is5:20) because the Law of God is infallible.

Exodus 20 (Moral Law given the believer in serving God’s interest)
3 “You shall have no other gods before me.
4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Deut 12:1-3 (Judical Law given the state in serving God’s interest)
These are the decrees and laws you must be careful to follow in the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has given you to possess—as long as you live in the land. 2 Destroy completely all the places on the high mountains, on the hills and under every spreading tree, where the nations you are dispossessing worship their gods. 3 Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and burn their Asherah poles in the fire; cut down the idols of their gods and wipe out their names from those places.

Besides, bringing wrath upon those evil doers, the state is also given to protect the interest of religion, not just any religion but Biblical Christianity because if truth be told, worshiping any other God than the Triune God Almighty is damning and so the State is given to reflect God’s justice in safeguarding the worship of God Almighty. So, a State that functions under God has the power to execute people on proven charges of blasphemy (Lev24:16/Mk3:29/Jn4:24) and though the worldly Christian may find this appalling, he/she ironically finds himself/herself at home with counterfeit political power executing people on charges of treason, which only happen to prove detrimental to the interest of the State, not God.

Rev 13
11 Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon. 12 It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence, and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose mortal wound was healed. 13 It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people, 14 and by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of the beast it deceives those who dwell on earth, telling them to make an image for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived. 15 And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain.

Now the beast of the sea mentioned in Revelation 13 is apostate political power, so coming back to the fable many are led to believe concerning religious neutrality and religious plurality, we understand from Revelations 13 that only apostate religion (the beast of the land) is given to exercise the corrupt power of the beast of the sea (apostate political power). Nonetheless, knowing that it is not the State which is Sovereign but God, we understand that the State’s duty is to protect God’s interest in society. In this sense, the Civil Law is set in place to hedge the Moral Law. To give you an example, Mat 5:27-28 teaches us to guard even the motives of our heart in dealing with adultery. However, unlike the Moral Law, the Judicial/Civil Law cannot function as a thought police but if we were act on those wicked intentions viz. murder, adultery and covetousness, it is then that the Civil Law has the power to punish such crimes because the State is an instrument of God’s deserving justice here on earth.

1 John 5
16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.

1Cor 15:56
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

1 Timothy 1
8 We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. 9 We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine 11 that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.

From 1John 5:16-17, 1Cor 15:56 and 1 Timothy 1:8-11, we see that what the Christian owes the government is obedience to the Moral Law of God because the believer who showcases the fruit of Holy Spirit in his/her life (Gal5:22-23) has nothing to fear concerning the Judicial Law exercised by the State. Today, in refusing to be a conduit of God’s righteousness in society, most governments ironically find it is a herculean task to enforce Biblical Judicial Law, which are only a few hundred morality based laws, while these same governments zealously impose thousands of new laws each year to serve their own vested interest. For any minister, whether that be of the Church or the State, his/her duty is always to administer, meaning he/she only exercises that which is already written. Unlike what is happening today, a minister can never write his/her own laws whether it is to govern the State or Shepherd the Church, the purpose of the minister is to only administer the Law that is already revealed to the Church/State in Christ.

Rev 22
18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.

Like Apostate Egypt during the time of Moses and Apostate Assyria during the time of Daniel, the State today claims to be omnicompetent in the control it exercises over its people, which is as though it were a god. A government can only tax that which it lays claim to but today we have taxes like Income Tax, Inheritance Tax and even Gift Tax. Though these taxes may claim to secure financial spending in the country, it so often turns out to only help ministers within the government accumulate the most money for themselves that remains unaccounted for in Swiss bank accounts. These taxes only keep on increasing as the days go by and the worst thing is we are all ok with this because most of us don’t know any better. Biblically in Exodus 30:14-15, only a Census Tax was to be collected, which was within every person’s reach and the same was paid by every person, it wasn’t the same percentage but the same amount.

Exodus 30:14-15
14 All who cross over, those twenty years old or more, are to give an offering to the Lord. 15 The rich are not to give more than a half shekel and the poor are not to give less when you make the offering to the Lord to atone for your lives.

The State today covers up it robbery by providing Healthcare and Education. However, it must be understood that the State cannot provide unless it first takes from the people. Also, healthcare and Education are vocational institutes and being institutes of vocation they are not to be usurped by the State. For those of you care to notice, the state has only made life worse when it chooses to leave aside its given duty of bearing the wrath of God against the wicked and usurp duties of the Church to excuse itself from further taxing the people.

Luke 3
12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”
13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them.
14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”
He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”

To conclude, when it comes to understating the Godly Decorum of the State, there are three aspects to learn: its Origin that is God; its function that is to terrorise ungodly evil doers; its powers which talks about its ministry, its authority to bear the sword of God’s good/deserving justice and the power to tax without extorting (Lk3:12-14).

A Little Insight on Ungodly Tattoos!

Lev 19:28
You shall not make any cuts in your body for the dead nor make any tattoo marks on yourselves: I am the LORD.

1Cor 6
19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

I would like to ask you this question. Have you ever wondered why a person’s first name is known as his/her Christian name? It is because when a person is baptized, he is given a name, which recognizes him as an individual in society and though his last name ties him to his family, his first name or Christian name as I should say, is what distinguishes him as an individual called out of the mediocrity that is this world into Jesus Christ. Owing to European colonisations over most of the world in the past, such a naming system in now standard around the globe but there are still many cultures where there is no clear system as such as having a first name, which as I said is also called a person’s Christian name, this today is regardless of a person’s religious background. In India, many people call each other by their last name because though we have made significant progress on the people’s equality front, there is still a significant element of the caste system present today, which appears to be engrained in the people’s mindset because calling a person by their last name reveals the nature of that person’s caste and work.

John 15:19
If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

Tattoos were purposed to work in a similar manner, they indicated a person’s social status in society and served to mark the kind of pagan rituals a person was entrusted with in that society, rituals ranging from human sacrifice to harvest preparations, as practiced in that culture. Tattoos were also used by warriors to instill fear in their enemies. The role of tattoos hasn’t changed much, back in the day tribals used tattoos to mark their own and today gangsters use tattoos as well to brand members who are aligned to them, just like we do with cattle. Of course, there are people who voluntarily go in for tattoos but such is the nature of their unbelief because they desire to conform more to society concerning what is cool and happening than choosing to conform to a lifestyle of truth by King Christ (Jn14:6) because these poor souls haven’t tasted the regenerating power of God to help them walk by faith and not by sight.

Jeremiah 17
5 Thus says the LORD, “Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind And makes flesh his strength, And whose heart turns away from the LORD.
6 “For he will be like a bush in the desert And will not see when prosperity comes, But will live in stony wastes in the wilderness, A land of salt without inhabitant.
7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD And whose trust is the LORD.
8 “For he will be like a tree planted by the water, That extends its roots by a stream And will not fear when the heat comes; But its leaves will be green, And it will not be anxious in a year of drought Nor cease to yield fruit.
9 “The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it?

A look at Mat 7:13-14 makes us wonder why the road to destruction is broad while the path to God is narrow. The thing is from the fall; Adam has passed to all his posterity a standard of righteousness which is each their own and yet separate from the righteousness of God. So, it is that a person is naturally given to ungodliness, making the traversing of the road to destruction well within a person’s nature. Hence people naturally conform to wickedness in society. The funny thing about such demonic deception, prevailing in society is that these same emasculated people who condone homosexuality in society, somehow have come to figure that wickedness is more fearsome/potent than Godliness and this reflects in the nature of their tattoos as well because on the surface they look vicious but the very fabric of their nature says they are emasculated of strength and are nothing more than squatters waiting to be overthrown as just payment for their poor stewardship and unbelief over all that they were given charge of. Such was the case of Adam; He was given stewardship over all the earth (Gen 1:28) but his fall to sin corrupted the earth over which he was given stewardship and so today creation itself is anxiously waiting for the revealing of God’s adopted sons (Rom 8:31) who by the saving merit of Christ (Rom 5:17), shall take their rightful place as faithful stewards overall the earth.

1Sam 15 (in the context Lev 19:28)
22 Samuel said, “Has the LORD as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams.
23 “For rebellion is as the sin of divination, And insubordination is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He has also rejected you from being king.”

1Cor 1:25
Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Now in dealing with the subject of Christian tattoos, I would like to site scripture from 1 Sam 15:1-23. We ought to understand that when God clearly commands something as He has done concerning tattoos in Lev 19:28, there are no two ways about it but if one acts like he/she knows better then that undermines the wisdom of God and God then is not really Lord/King over his/her heart because he/she has proven himself/herself to be a self-serving fool, who thinks he/she can do better by himself/herself than by obeying God’s instructions concerning morality.

Jeremiah 31:33
“But this is the covenant which I make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the LORD, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

2Cor 6:16
Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, “I will dwell in them and walk among them; And I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

The world has the uncanny ability to go about doing things without knowing what they are doing. In most cases people do what they do, simply because everybody is doing it. You name it: piracy, porn, fornication; people’s excuse for doing it, is simply because everybody is doing it and such is the case with tattoos as well. However, if you were to check the statistics of social behaviour that is prevalent among people who wear tattoos, you would come to understand the implication of wilful disobedience unto God. Another reason that goes against any such thing as Christian tattoos is that the Christian life is lived not according to the world but according to God and so when we understand the mindset of the world in their unbelief versus the mindset we are to have in Christ, we learn that unlike the Christian who lives loving God first and then neighbour at par with himself, the unbeliever lives serving himself first while his neighbour is not at par with himself but is merely the means by which they each serve their own lawless appetite viz. adultery, covetousness and other aspects of sin. It is in this manner that a gulf exists between the believer and the unbeliever in creating and sustaining trusting relationships and so a believer cannot use to serve God what an unbeliever uses to serve his/her own appetite, which in this cases is tattoos.

God’s will in the groaning of a living spirit: Repentance!

“Repentance unto life is the saving grace wrought in heart of the sinner by the spirit and word of God, whereby, out of the sight and sense, not only of the danger but also of the filthiness and odiousness of his sins and upon the apprehension of God mercy to such as are penitent, he so grieves and hates his sins, as that he turns from them all to God, purposing and endeavouring constantly to walk with Him, in all the ways of new obedience.”

The above passage on repentance is taken from the Westminster Larger Catechism, question 76. Today many of those who refer to themselves as Bible believing Christians have picked up a doctrine of grace where the Moral Law is made redundant. Such is the antinomian, who believes that the grace of God is given him to live as he pleases in Christ because that defines freedom to him/her. From Romans 3:20 & 7:7, we learn that the knowledge of sin is in our understanding of the Moral Law because repentance requires that we come to terms with the filthy and odious (inciting hatred) nature of our sins and the Holy Spirit Himself makes this possible by interceding for us with groaning too deep for words.

Romans 8
26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;
27 and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

2Cor 7
10 For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.

When we read the term Law in the Bible, we ought to understand, which aspect of Law the Bible is talking about in that particular context. There are three aspects to Biblical Law: Ceremonial Law, Moral Law and Judicial Law. The Ceremonial Law was a set of ceremonies (meaningful rituals) given Old Testament Israel, which all pointed to Christ and His redemptive work. The Judicial Law on the other hand was given the State (to the Judges for law & order Num11:16) to govern society and protect it from individuals or syndicates which would cause it harm. The Moral Law on the other hand, is the very nature of God given to the believer that he/she may look into it like it were a mirror (James1:22-25), so as to thereby work willingly on his/her nature in being conformed to the likeness of Christ (Rom8:29). In helping the individual see his own wretched self as God sees him/her, this person is brought to repentance upon the apprehension on God’s mercy available in Jesus Christ alone. Without the Moral Law, there is neither the realization of sin (Rom7:7) unto repentance nor a standard of righteousness in heeding unto Christ (Jn14:15). Taking a look at Rom 7:9-10, 15-17, 23-25 and 2Cor7:10 in the context of Jn12:24-26, we realize that the transition of passing from living to suit ourselves to living for God, requires us to die to ourselves, which is accomplished in repentance.

Gal 5
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

1Tim 1
8 But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully,
9 realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers
10 and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching,
11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.

A look at the above verses helps us realize that this is written in reference to the Judicial Law because those who live by the Moral Law have nothing to fear from the Judicial Law. Let me give you a Biblical example: in Mat5:27-28 Jesus teaches us, not to even be entertained from the ogling of women, to this effect He is teaching us to guard our hearts and minds against adultery. So for a man who guards his mind from adulterous thoughts, such a man need not fear the judicial law, for he himself is God-fearing, abiding in Christ i.e. living by the standard of the Moral Law (Jn15:6-10). Besides, there is no judiciary in the world that has outlawed love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control and those who practice this in their Christianity are righteous having nothing to fear from the Judicial Law, which is put in place for immoral people.

Exodus 34
6 Then the LORD passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth;
7 who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.”

Exodus34:6-7, is referred to the Magna Carta of Christianity because it captures the essence of what the Bible teaches concerning God and His Salvation in just two verses. Verse 7 in Exodus 34 comes across as something of an oxymoron when it says: God keeps lovingkindness for thousands and forgives iniquity, transgression and sin while by no means leaving the guilty to go unpunished. The only way this can be explained is when we consider the role of Jesus as our Saviour. The Son of God added to Himself the complete nature of man (except sin) being born of a virgin and presented Himself as an unblemished substitutionary sacrifice for all sin. We must understand that each of God’s attributes is perfect and so God doesn’t compromise on His justice so as to have mercy. You may feel inclined to believe, that God could have just as easily spoken out forgiveness and it would have been done but the truth is God does not function like the world (Is55:8) because when He says something, it is backed by what He is going to do. Such is also with prophesy, where God is not simply looking into the future and telling you what will come to pass but He is instead telling you what He is going do that will define the future as He says it, such is His Sovereign nature. So unlike the world, which speaks that which is only most convenient to them in a particular moment, God speaks in verse 7 of Exodus 34, to indicate the work of the Lord Jesus Christ who bore the wrath of God in its full measure while carrying the sins on all God’s people in His body (1Pet2:24). For those who die outside God’s mercy presented us in Jesus Christ, no matter how old and senile they were or even if they died in their unwitting adolescence, they will for eternity pay the wages of every sinful thought and deed in the deserving fires of hell because whom they have sinned against throughout all of their natural lives is God Almighty (Jn15:25).

Psalm 51 (read in context of 1Jn4:20 & Mat25:41-46)
3 For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me.
4 Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge.

The fear of hell can never drive an individual to true repentance and neither is repentance produced in and off oneself. Repentance is and has always been according to the will of God (2Cor7:10/Jn1:12-13). We ought to understand that Salvation lies in one turning to God, which is accomplished in the Lord Jesus Christ because for so long as we are living for ourselves, we cannot say we are genuine believers but when we have died to ourselves (Jn12:24-26) and are a new creation in Christ living for the Lord (2Cor 5:17), then in such a case, Salvation is not on the count of the fear of hell but from the fear of God (Ps85:9), whom we love. It is this genuine love for God that excites our hatred for immorality while catalysing our passion for righteousness, according to God’s good pleasure, taught to us in Christ (Jn1:L18/Col1:19).

Psalm 13
5 But I have trusted in Your lovingkindness; My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation.
6 I will sing to the LORD, Because He has dealt bountifully with me.

Romans 10
8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”–that is, the word of faith which we are preaching,
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.

Repentance therefore is the groaning of the Holy Spirit at work in our weakness in teaching us the things of Christ and producing in us the fruits of the Spirit, as the Church is like a Bride being prepared to meet her Groom, that is Christ. It might interest you to note that just as Adam is mentioned as a son of God in Lk3:38, so from the knowledge of the fact, that creation is made for God’s glory, and as Eve was brought to Adam in Gen2:22 to which Adam replied in verse 23… this bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh… she shall be called woman because she is drawn out of man. So it also with His Church, which constitutes the body of believers, born of Christ’ Spirit (Jn3:3, 16 & 15:26/Rev21:2) because God is Spirit (Jn4:24). These are not God’s people primarily from their own choosing but because their circumcision is of the heart by the Spirit (Rom2:29/Col 2:9-12) and not of hands (will of man).

“All true repentance arises from the sight of a dying saviour – One who has died for us. Terror may produce remorse, only a sense of forgiven sin will ever produce true repentance. True repentance is after all only love weeping at the foot of the cross. True repentance is the soul sorrowing for sins that have been so freely forgiven because of the death of the Lord Jesus Christ.” – T. V. Moore

“We must remember at the beginning of repentance is a sense of God’s mercy. When men are persuaded that God is ready to give pardon they then begin to gather courage to repent, otherwise perverseness will ever increase in them and how much so ever their sins may frighten them they will yet never return to the Lord.” – John Calvin

To conclude, I have quoted above T. V. Moore and John Calvin on the criticality of apprehending God’s mercy made available to us in Jesus Christ. So, taking our cue from 2Cor7:10 we learn that the groaning of a living Spirit, whether that be in Repentance or Sanctification is according to Sovereign will of God unto salvation.
